Crystal oscillators are commonly used in communication systems to generate clock signals for frequency counters and to provide reference signals for specific systems. Generally Crystal oscillators are divided into two kinds: ordinary crystal and high stability crystal oscillator. The difference between the two types is that high stability crystal oscillators have very high frequency stability and anti-interference ability and can maintain a stable oscillation frequency in different ambient temperatures without being affected by external temperature changes. Our SS7402 Frequency Counter provides an optional high stability crystal oscillator, then we take it for an example to introduce the importance of high stability crystal oscillator.

1. Provide high precision clock signal

The main advantages of high stability crystal oscillator include high frequency stability, high precision, strong long-term stability, low phase noise, and can meet the needs of high-precision instruments. The use of high stability crystal oscillator in counters ensures that the time reference in the counting process is very accurate. The time reference is the basis for ensuring the accuracy of various measurement and timing devices, which defines the standard and precision of time and directly affects the accuracy of measurement results. SS7402 equipped with the high stability crystal oscillator can achieve an accuracy of 5 x 10-8.

2. Ensure working accuracy and reliability

High-stability crystal can maintain a stable oscillation frequency in different temperature environments, without the influence of external interference, which ensures the working accuracy and reliability of electronic equipment. The use of high stability crystal oscillator in counters can improve the stability and operational efficiency of the device and avoid counting errors caused by clock jitter.

The following is a comparison table of the parameters of SS7402 using crystal oscillator and high stability crystal oscillator:

Daily AgingYearly Aging
Standard crystal oscillator1×10-8/day5×10-7/year
High stability crystal oscillator5×10-10/day5×10-8/year

3. Adapt to the application needs of different fields

High stability crystal oscillators are widely used in a variety of fields that require high-precision time reference, such as wireless communications, satellite navigation, computer networks, instrumentation, audio and video equipment. The use of high stability crystals in counters can meet the needs for high precision time reference in different fields.

Therefore, the use of high stability crystals, the higher the counting accuracy and stability of the counter, and vice versa. For example, under the control of a 10Mhz crystal, the counter's counting accuracy can reach a very high level. However, if an ordinary crystal oscillator is used, the counting accuracy and stability of the counter will be significantly reduced. Therefore, the high stability crystal oscillator has a very important influence on the precision and stability of the counter.
